Kim attended the University of Iowa. As a native Iowan born and raised in LeMars, Iowa, Kim has always been very interested in Grant Wood and his paintings depicting the rural American Midwest. Kim serves as the vice-chair of the Colony’s National Board of Advisors.

She expresses her care for Grant Wood and his artistry, as a native-born Iowan, "I was born and raised in Iowa, and I have always had an interest in American Regionalism and how it relates to Grant Wood."

She attended the University of Iowa and graduated in 1978 from the Radiologic Technology Program.
